Who am I?

Thanks for visiting my website. I am a freelance writer and photographer based in Tokyo.

During my almost 10 years in Japan I have written several hundred features for publications such as  National Geographic News, Discover Magazine, Wired Magazine, the Japan Times, the JAL and ANA inflight magazines and the Japanese-language edition of Newsweek.

Before becoming a freelance writer-photographer I worked as an English teacher, proof-reader, researcher for a Japanese newspaper in London, and as a Japanese-English translator. I spent 18 months on a Japanese government scholarship at Tokyo University in 2002 and 2003.

Pre-Japan I studied Classics at Cambridge University in my home UK. That hasn’t been especially useful to my work here so far, but you never know :) I speak and read Japanese fluently.

There are some examples of my work here. I was interviewed recently by the Japan Times.

Assignments and Sales

I’m available for assignment in Tokyo and throughout Japan. The photos on this website are available for sale by contacting me below or via my archive: editorial stock photos from Japan. If you sign up to the archive you can store lightbox selections on the site and keep track of my latest work.

Much of my work is photo-text features, and I am also moving into audio and video. If you think I might be able to work for your publication please contact me below. Maybe I can suggest some story ideas?  You will get an experienced reporter, photographer and fixer with fluent Japanese all in one.

I also have an archive on Alamy:
